Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made a bold prediction that AR Glasses (Augmented Reality Glasses) can replace smartphones in the coming decade. According to him, this change will remove the limitations of smartphones and provide a more interactive and natural technology experience.
How and Why Will Smartphones End?
According to Zuckerberg, the smartphone screen has been the main means of connecting people to the digital world, but it comes with some limitations. The small screen of the smartphone and the need to hold the device in hand limits people’s connection to the real world. For this reason, Meta is rapidly working on its AR Glasses project “Orion”, which can completely change people’s everyday experiences with virtual holograms and AI technology.
Meta believes that 1-2 billion people already wear glasses, so it will not take much time to adopt AR glasses. Thanks to Meta’s partnership with Ray-Ban, these glasses will be stylish and also equipped with modern technology like smart AI, virtual screen, microphone and camera.
Zuckerberg’s Vision: Combination of AI and AR
AR glasses will not be just screen replacements, but will provide a new interactive experience with AI integration. According to Zuckerberg, these glasses will do two main things:
Will show virtual screens and holograms, allowing you to view digital content in front of you without any physical device.
Real-time interaction will be possible through AI, allowing you to control the AR experience through your eyes or voice commands.
He says that this combination of AI and AR will lay the foundation for a “new age computing platform” that could end the era of smartphones.
When Will This Change Come?
Zuckerberg claims that widespread adoption of AR glasses may take up to 2030. However, it is still in an early stage and there are many technological challenges to bring it to market.
Meta’s first AR device “Orion” exists in prototype form, but due to its cost of $10,000 per unit, it is not yet available to general consumers. The company aims to bring this device to the general public in an affordable and compact form by 2027.
